• All life is connected- salmon could feed over 140 species of wildlife or die and return nutrients to the soil
• Ecology- the study of interactions among living things, and between living things and their surroundings
• Ernst Haeckel first used the term in 1866. Before then, organisms were studied in isolation; they did not look at its interactions with other organisms
• Organism- individual thing.
• Population- a group of the same species in an area
• Community- a group of different species that live together in one area
• Ecosystem- includes all organisms as well as the climate, soil, water, rocks, and other nonliving things in a given area
• Biome- a major regional or global community of organisms
