Mendel is credited with the first experiments of heredity. He found simple dominance and recession.

Mendel's Three Step Experiment

Step 1-
Mendel allowed the peas to self-pollinate for several generations. This is called true-breeding.

Step 2-
Mendel cross pollinated 2 parent generation plants with contrasting forms of the trait (purple and white flowers) The new generation is called F1.

Step 3-
Mendel allowed F1 generation to self pollinate. He called the offspring F2.
