o Food chain- a sequence that links species by their feeding relationships
o Follows the path the energy CAN take. Other options are still open.
TYPES OF CONSUMERS
o Herbivores- organisms that eat only plants
o Carnivores- organisms that eat only animals
o Omnivores- organisms that eat plants and animals
o Detritivores- organisms that eat detritus, or dead organic matter
o Decomposers- Detritvores that break down organic matter into simpler compounds
o Specialist- consumer that primarily eats one specific organism or feeds on a very small number of organisms
o Food chains help describing relationships with specialists
o Specialists are very sensitive to changes in the availability of prey; most endangered species are specialists
o Generalists- consumers that have a varying diet
TROPHIC LEVELS
o Trophic levels- levels of nourishment in a food chain
o Carnivores are the highest trophic level, followed by herbivores then producers
o Energy flows up the trophic levels
o Omnivores change trophic levels often, depending on what they’ve eaten
o Only 10% of all the energy moves on to the next level
